Fall Into The GAP

I worked for a hotel that does a lot of business with both
conventions and weddings that come through our area. I had just
recently started working the front counter and had been warned in
advance that the General Manager wasn’t very nice.

Giving the guy the benefit of the doubt I continued working at this
hotel for a few months with no problems. The GM lived up to his
reputation though. Throwing temper tantrums (accurate description
too, he once was so mad he fell over and beat his fists on the
ground.)abusing my co-workers, drinking/stealing from the in house
bar. For the record this gentleman is a perfect example of why you
don’t give friends management positions in your business.

The last straw broke when we had a very large wedding reception come
to the hotel. The wedding party had come through and decorated their
room and set up the gift table with some “help” from the GM. All in
all a regular day until the GM comes to me at the desk and hands me a
gift card for $50 at the GAP telling me that the wedding party gave it
to him and he had no use for it.

Later in the night one of the bridesmaids approached the desk and
asked if she could speak to the manager. Apparently there was a
basket full of cards for the happy couple that had anything from gift
cards to cash in them and several had gone missing. With the GM
conspicuously unavailable the front desk manager and I decided to
poke around the conventions area and found, in a trash can, 8 cards
addressed to the couple torn open and emptied. One of them read “I
know 50 bucks at the GAP doesn’t get you much but I hope you enjoy.”

Several mortifying hours later and a few extremely satisfying calls
to police later the GM was arrested and his best friend, the owner of
the hotel, fired him on the spot. What a creep.

AND he tried to get me fired/arrested on the basis of accepting
stolen goods. But the married couple told me to take the gift card as
a reward for finding the thief. FTW.

Delete Some Files

My father was at work for a computer defense plant that contracted
with the US government. This was in the early 2000′s.

His boss started complaining about how his laptop was too heavy, bulky,
etc. My Dad told him to delete some files.

The moron actually did it! He thought that deleting computer files
would make a laptop less heavy and shrink its size.

Two months later, he faxed my Dad some information by trying to send him
a floppy disk. Through a fax machine.

Greasy Popcorn

When I was 17, I worked at a movie theater. There are so many stories
I could tell you, but this is the worst one. When I first started
there, the manager was this mean woman, Jan. She was rude and yelled
about nonsense things. When the company fired her, my co-workers and
I had a party. Only to find out that her replacement was 100% worse.
He put cameras everywhere, including the bathrooms, yes the stalls
too, and would watch them every night. He smelt like a mixture of
shit and body odor Not only did he yell about being one minute late, but
refused to fix the popcorn machine when it started leaking oil onto
the popcorn. We were to make sure the top layer was all clean popcorn
cuz once the lights went off, they wouldn’t see black popcorn. I never
eat popcorn at theaters anymore. It was almost a year before he fixed
it, and only because it would no longer make popcorn. So glad I don’t
work there anymore!!

Hula Hoops

I worked at a fairly large home improvement chain (at two of their
locations over a period of 3 years) and for the most part loved it.

We got a new hire in my sports/seasonal department who knew next to
nothing about it and was always coming to me for help. However,
within two months of his hiring (while he was still clueless), he was
assigned to be department manager.

Quickly us younger girls noted that he constantly leered and made
lewd comments about everyone.

A couple made me cringe horribly. Once he commented to a cashier that
she had the perfect ‘stripper legs’. While some young girls were
checking out the hula hoops in our department, he leaned over to another
girl and commented that they’d look better if they used them naked.

After many complaints to senior management and nothing being done and
one too many comments to me about my chest and me coming home in tears,
I started a petition.

Every female in the store signed it and over half the males did as well. We
agreed that if nothing was done with him then we were leaving. That
would have been over 30 people gone.

My store manager and district manager pulled me aside to discuss why
I didn’t just talk to them and I calmly explained that I had many
times as had others and this was the only way we thought our point
would get across.

He was given the option of quitting or being fired and stormed out of
the store.

I of course saved the original petition in case they didn’t do
anything so I could take it to the store owners wife who was huge
against sexual harassment in the workplace!
