At The Turn

I worked summers at a high end golf course and my boss was really
strange. He would stare at you without saying a word for several
minutes and he had a really pronounced crossed eye so you weren’t
quite sure if he was staring at you. He would also watch soap operas
in his office with his dog.

One week we were really short staffed and super busy so I forgot to
put a tee marker (one!) back after I mowed the tee boxes. Well he
caught up to me as I was heading to mow the back nine holes. Our
conversation:

Boss: Hey you F***IN’ forgot to put the tee markers back!

Me: Uh sorry man.

Boss: Well we can’t have a F***IN’ idiot working for us!
(I had worked there for 4 summers as a model employee)

Me: Well I’ll tell you what, that back nine is gonna be perfect.

Boss: Good.

Me: You wanna know why?

Boss: (strange look) Why?

Me: Because YOU’RE gonna f***in’ mow it!

With that I got off the mower and sauntered across the course on my
way home. He just kept yelling “Hey, HEY, HEEYY!” I didnt’t even turn
around.

  3. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiccee. is this the first of his outbursts though? he’d hafta piss me off quite often for me to just walk off the job.

  4. hater on July 29th, 2010
  5. That was ONE occurrence where he did something bad. By walking out of the job like that, I hope you realize you probably won’t get a reference from that company.

  7. Sometimes I wonder if anyone is actually moderating this website. This isn’t really a boss-fail story. It’s more like: boss is somewhat odd, boss gets mad at employee for screwing up, employee acts like a jackass and quits. The end.

  8. Tyler on July 29th, 2010
  9. So this is an asshole employee story rather than an asshole boss story? You deserve the menial labor and crappy jobs that are your future.

  10. Hawk on July 29th, 2010
  11. You ready? The trolls are going to eat you alive.

  12. Raze on July 29th, 2010
  13. Bravo! Absolutely well done!

No one has the right to talk to anyone like that in the workplace. The only problem, you may have burned your bridges.. But if it’s just a summer job, who cares… amirite? ;)

  14. Emaloid on July 29th, 2010
  15. We’re human. We make mistakes. It’s not a reason to have a massive freak out and scream at an employee (unless it’s done regularly on purpose). Good on you for standing up to that arsehole.

  16. PrincessSimmi on July 30th, 2010
  17. What the fuck has this site turned into? It’s now just shitty “I’m a crap employee with an arrogant attitude” site.

    Fucking millenials.

  18. Aimee on July 30th, 2010
  19. overreacting… You should had suck it up, and call him names in his back, instead of slamming the door like that. But you were maybe looking for an excuse to quit and enjoy your summer?

  20. Greg on July 30th, 2010
  21. Wait, I don’t get it. You were already going to mow the back nine. He told you you were doing so (even though you already planned to) and you left?
Either you’re leaving something out or you’re a terrible employee.

  22. Kelsey on July 30th, 2010
  23. You know what, GOOD for you!

I, for one, am tired of absolute assholes in the workforce and am glad when one gets a comeuppance!

  25. you are fucking awesome!!!

  26. kyle on July 30th, 2010
  27. Yeah. That attitude will serve you really well in your adult life. I could understand if this was the umpteenth time he came after you, but you said you’d been a “model” employee. Sounds to me like you were sick of the job and were looking for an excuse to quit. Besides, my guess is that this is the way the story went inside your head when you were thinking later of what you wish you’d said.

  42. TheKillingWords on July 30th, 2010
  43. I think you are missing the point of this story, it is not at all about a lawn mower jockey or his cross eyed boss.

It is about a dog who watches soap operas.

  44. Toasty O's on July 30th, 2010
  45. This is one time I think the employee was in the wrong. The boss acts odd, so what? Normal is subjective anyway. But to quit after only ONE blow up? Dude, you have some serious growing up to do.

  46. Jami on July 30th, 2010
  47. Screw these nut jobs who say that “you” are the problem.

Any boss who’s gonna call you and *idiot* over such a small mistakes (and say “We don’t need IDIOTS working for us”)…. screw him. If you were indeed a model employee as you say, the lesson he ought to be learning there is not to react so harshly over such a simple/small mistake. Or it might cost him another model employee.

    I say good for you.

  48. ron on July 30th, 2010
  49. Here we have yet another “stupid employee” story.

The OP states that the boss stares at people for a few minutes, but then in the next sentence, states that the boss has a pronounced cross-eye so you’re not sure if he’s staring at you. That’s quite contradictory. Stupid employee #1.

Stupid employee #2. The boss yelled at the OP for a mistake, so the OP gets an attitude about it. I guess the OP is perfect and doesn’t like when he/she is shown to be wrong.

With your ethic, OP, get used to standing on the unemployment line.

  50. Heywood on July 30th, 2010
  51. @Raze: I wouldn’t say that the “trolls” are going to eat this OP alive. People are merely reacting to a bad employee who’s trying to push blame onto his/her boss. With the way a lot of the letter writer’s are at their jobs, I’m surprised they have a job at all! A lot of them are weak, selfish people who make it clear that they don’t want to work and earn a living.

Believe it or not, not all bosses are at fault. This OP proves that one.

  52. Heywood on July 30th, 2010
  53. Me thinks a lot of bosses come to this site to read what people are saying about their bosses. Maybe hoping to catch one of their employees saying something bad about them so they can fire them.
And they are always against the employees. Had a bad boss and got back at them through HR or the Law? Then you are labeled a trouble maker… “Why didn’t you just quit?”
Or, if you have had it with an abusive boss and you quit.. You’re again labeled a malcontent and loser.
Personally, I’ve had a lot of great bosses. Many just ok bosses and just a few total turdskins. I never put up with abusive bosses. Never. You want to scream and call me names? GFYS. I gave a boss a today notice. He thought I meant 2 day… He said I had to give him two weeks… I laughed and walked out the door. Their loss.
I’ve managed 100 seat call centers and always tried to treat people with respect. If you treat people like shit you’re going to get shit out of them.
Too many bosses, especially business owners, treat people like shit because they want to dominate. They get off on having power over other people.

  54. A~ on July 30th, 2010
  55. I love it how some of the people commenting on this site will complain “how could you put up with that for so long?” And now you have someone who quits at the first sign of a bad boss and the same people are saying “After one time and you quit?!?” Why don’t you tell us in your infinite wisdom what the appropriate amount of harassment is required before a person is expected to quit.

  56. Nope on July 30th, 2010
  57. What a horrible employee. I certainly hope you couldn’t find another job in this tough economy and you suffer fiscally for your inappropriate attitude of entitlement.

  58. Treb on July 30th, 2010
  59. Wow. I didn’t know that the economy had recovered and that there are now (well-paying) jobs to pick from for anyone who wants them. I’m tendering my resignation immediately, because I’m tired of the indignities that I have to put up with to keep a roof over my family’s head at my current job.

    I’m sure I won’t have a problem finding work elsewhere…………………

  63. Wow. I like to bitch at people for things that they do. Maybe I should start commenting on peoples stories.

“Oh you’re just arrogant, and a whiner.”
    Get a fucking life.

  64. TwoHundredFifty9 on August 2nd, 2010
  65. OK. Can I have yours?

But first, tell me, what’s your routine?
Balls then shaft, or shaft then balls?
And what type of breath mint is the most effective?

  66. rafboy on August 2nd, 2010
  67. The OP was clearly a teenager working for extra cash rather than to support him or herself, and was probably going to be leaving the job for good shortly thereafter, so had little to lose by behaving like a spoiled child. The boss’ behavior may have been rude (I can’t imagine calling an employee an idiot or any other insult unless they’d just caused someone to be injured), but in fact the employee had made a mistake and probably would not have bothered to go back and check for it so the reprimand was justified if excessive.

  68. Jeff on August 2nd, 2010
  69. @ Tyler: I believe this site is self-moderating. At least, that is my opinion after reading a number of comments from self-appointed copy editors and writing critics. Not to mention all the folks who feel the need to “call bullshit” on every other post (lord-have-mercy, you have NO IDEA how much I hate that term, “I’m gonna have to call bullshit on that….”). To the best of my knowledge, a few folks just post whatever and let the readers and trolls cut them down for content (or lack thereof), spelling, grammar, and credibility.

  70. Temp Ted on August 2nd, 2010
  71. Did you guys who are criticizing the author even actually read it. The guy cussed him out and called him an idiot. Sure, maybe some of you are willing to take abuse from a boss but some of us are not. He forgot to put one thing away, happens everyone eventually. Everyone makes mistakes. To be cussed at and insulted by a boss for it is crossing the line. I would of walked too if my boss ever called me an idiot. I won’t take abuse like that. If you want to that is up to you.

  72. Randy D on August 4th, 2010
  73. The point was that in a much better economy- absolutely. I probably would have fixed that gopher chasing eye with a smack upside the head.
But this economy is shit, and most of us have to put up with stuff that we wouldn’t have put up with otherwise, just to keep a roof over our heads, our families fed and bills paid.
I understand that the gig was a summer job, and probably not that vital. Maybe I projected my own frustrations a wee bit…………

  74. rafboy on August 4th, 2010
  75. @Raze: I know what trolls are but I could only picture the troll dolls with fuzzy pink hair and that makes them laughable.

I think both employee and employer were as bad as each other on this one. They both let their short fuses get the better of them, not unlike quite a few commenters here with fuzzy pink hair.

  79. I looked it up even though I was spot on with my guess- it marks where golfers tee off. I have no idea even after looking it up if it is a big deal or not. It seems like it would be abnormal for somebody to to scream obscenities on a golf course though.

But it doesn’t feel like this was the first time there was belittling behavior to be chased down like that. Sure he didn’t have a great attitude( who could blame him?) but it’s not just women who are “get” to object to abusive behavior in the work place.

This guy made the right call.
