When I was 16, I worked in a fast food pizza buffet place during the
summer. I didn’t really have massive issues with my boss for the most
part except for his continuing stares at me. One day, I was feeling
really ill so I arranged for my best friend to take over my shift and
to come in the next day. The boss agreed and I left. The next day I
was feeling slightly better so I went into work thinking that at the
most I was just not going to feel well. About two hours into my shift,
I begged my manager to let me go home. He refused. So, in front of a
restaurant full of people eating, an hour later, I start running to
the bathroom but end up vomiting into a trash can. I handle their
food. A lot of people left when they realized that my boss still
wouldn’t let me go home. How gross is that! I was really glad when I
never had to go into that place again.
You should have just stayed home.
Cue the “THATS YOUR JOB” “YOU SHOULD BE GREATFULL HE’S LETTING YOU WORK THERE” “HE’S THE BOSS HE CAN DO THAT” long list of replies.
Why didn’t you just quit?
If you had puked in front of everyone he would have had no choice in letting you go home.
Not cool of him to do that. But that story was boring.
Why did you go in? It’s customary to take an extra day off after being sick just to recover so you’re better the next day.
I feel so lucky for my boss. If she even thinks I might be sick or not over being sick I get sent right back home. Of course it doesn’t bother me as I am on salary
Gee, Brad, are you bitter about some replies? Lol!
Ya beat me to it Brad, the boss was wrong and bad for business (as we’ve seen in the body of the posting).
Yeah right, Brad. Do you want to eat their if a sick employee is working?
Brad….that WAS her job! Hell….thin crust with pepperoni, sausage and puke was on the menu that day.
@ Kenzie
Where the hell is this customary?
If you’re sick for 3 days you don’t take 4 off. That is just ridiculous!
A good manager does not want a sick employee to come to work because you do not want them to spread anything to other employees or customers. In the long term that will cost far more than the inconvenience or cost of having to cover the shift. If the boss on day 2 suspected you were malingering, he should have let you go but insisted that you see a doctor.
As for the idea that it’s customary to take an extra day off every time you are sick “to recover”, I don’t know what place of employment would keep people around who pull that nonsense. If you’re capable of working and not contagious, you go to work.
Kenzie- Take an extra day off? At a fast food place, as a teen? Not if you want to keep your job… :/
You should of taken the day off but I have read that in order to get sick time you have to go into work and then be sent home… I was actually told that but it depends on the place. In all honesty he should of sent you home because it is not safe for you or the people around you. They can not fire you for being sick and it is risky business if one of the customers goes to the DM or to the head of the place and complains. It is one of the rules in our store guidebook that states if you are truly sick on the job the manager most take over and call someone in or stay (if needed) and send you home.
You’re actually contaigious BEFORE you start throwing up or showing signs.
Have at that one.
As to why I went to work that day-I was 16 and had to pay for my own clothes, bills, ect. This was my only source of income and i needed the job. I had called and begged for him not to let me come in as i was sick and he said no, that if i did not come in I would be fired. Again, I was 16 and stupidly did not tell my mom until that night. The next day? My mom quit for me lol. And yes, he was reported but as of 2 years ago, still working there as the boss.
you shouldn’t have come in but oh well.
I kind of sort of enjoy coming to work when I’m sick so that I can infect the customers and fellow employees. I hate my job.
You should have puked on the buffet and made it out as an accident. That would’ve cleared out the place mighty fast. Plus you might have been able to go home.
