Digging For Gold

I work at a popular fast food restaurant as a manager. A fellow
manager is probably the nastiest person I’ve ever met. I honestly
don’t believe he showers. He has even admitted that his children have
been sent home because they stink! Not to mention he is constantly
farting when he is right next to you or walking by. One day I thought
he actually crapped in his pants it was so loud and made me gag!
He is always sticking his pens in his ears and then looking at them
to see what sort of “treasures” he can dig out.

Since we are a restaurant there will be a few crumbs on the prep
table and everytime he walks by he will scoop a little pile into his
hand and pop it in his mouth like its not a big deal!
I hate working with him because I always feel like I’m going to vomit
by the end of the day!

  1. This is why I went to college, so I wouldn’t end up in your situation.

  3. I see Moe is our latest little troll on here.

I feel for the poster, but I do enjoy letting off a good fart now and then!

  5. Wow, Moe. I know you’re a lonely, ugly bartender from the Simpsons and all, but that was pretty low even for Moe.

If I were you, I would talk to him about his odor and his other bad habits. But before you do, make sure your higher-ups know you’re going to have this conversation with him (in my experience, smelly people don’t like being told that they smell). I would imagine if you work for a popular chain, there is some sort of HR department or centralized corporate office contact you could speak to for guidance on this. Take the initiative to have the awkward, yet necessary conversation with him. After all, you’re his peer – neither one of you supervise the other.

Be gentle with him. Say things like “my olfactory senses are a little more sensitive than others” and “personal hygiene is important to me” and “concern for customer’s perception.” Remember, most stinky people don’t even know that they stink. And if they do know they stink and refuse to do anything about it, then they deserve for someone to be honest with them.

  7. I’ve read through a few, and it’s pretty obvious Moe is just a troll.

Anyway, that’s disgusting and you should report him to whoever is above his head. It’s unsanitary.

  9. Just because you went to college dosnt mean you won’t ever be there.

OP, I would report him to your supervisor or the health board.

  11. Like my college business professor told me once: Someone has to flip the burgers.

  13. Wow, do you still allow him to work there? Showing up and acting like that, (I’m a manager myself), he would have been booted a LONG time ago. Employees like him are only an extreme danger to the well-being of your customers.

  15. Have a bunch of friends come in while he is working and tell them to call and complain about his odor. Passive-aggressive? Yes, but effective as well.

  17. utterly disgusting, have you ever said anything to him?! really. he cant fire you, youre a manager too! the worst thing that could happen would be him trying to avoid you cause he knows you dont like him!

  19. I’d just report him. I’m sure the health department would have something to say about someone who reeks.

  21. He sound like my ex, Steve. When he gave our daughter away at her wedding – he farted a loud one. It’s on their wedding tape (which I got a copy of).
I’m sorry – but hey – I’ve heard it from my parents from day one – if you don’t get a college degree you will end up wearing a paper hat and asking “You want fries with that?” when you are 50. I hope you are working your way through school – you sound like a smart person who is capable of more.

  23. I really would not take the route of immediately reporting him. As the “Advocate” has pointed out, some smelly people may simply not know that they smell (oh no… WHAT IF I SMELL???). It would be much more reasonable to begin with a gentler approach. After all… if successful, you have solved a major problem without costing anyone his livelihood. By immediately taking the more drastic measure, you may cost a man his job (yes, I realize he has mostly cost himself his job. But we’re assuming he didn’t know), and not even get the real problem solved.

And Moe, what’s your favorite kind of tea? I love chamomile. Would you like some? How bout a little St. John’s Wart with that? Or… maybe even some laughing gas. :P

  27. I don’t see how you can stop somebody from farting, but if he is not showering before coming to work and the smell is making it difficult for you to do your job, you can certainly report this to your store manager. However, if they have trouble finding managers you might have to threaten to quit before they’ll do anything. You have to decide whether it’s worth putting up with in order to keep the job, or not.

  29. he’s using his stink as a weapon – i’ve seen it before

  31. Sweet merciful gawd- I’m so sorry. That is disgusting. I’m lucky that wouldn’t happen where I work.

You know if you want to try and stop the gas you could slip some beano into/ on top of his locker with a bow.

He might think that’s mean- Acidophilus pills would seem more clinical and might be received better. Seriously though- that guy has to be living off of nth processed white flour and expired MSG to have those kind of problems.
