Over the Christmas season, I worked at a store that sold kitchen
gadgets. My boss was young and very prone to moodswings. I survived
November and December there, despite getting reprimanded severely on
one occasion for “being bossy”.
Come January, my boss called me and said that if I were to continue
working there, my hours would be cut down to “maybe” one shift a week
and that if I wanted to find another job, that would be fine. I told
her I would think about it and let her know my decision. After about
a day, I called her back to tell her that I was indeed going to look
for another job. She then proceeds to start literally screaming at
me, telling me that I had just made a huge mistake and that I would
be sorry, that nobody would want to hire me because I was only 16,
and that I was “betraying” her. She also told me that she was very
upset that I had changed my employment status on my Facebook to
“unemployed” which she had found out about via the assistant manager,
a friend of mine on Facebook. I sat there in shock, really not knowing
quite what to do. Needless to say, I ended up finding another job in
about two weeks. I have not regretted leaving that place for a
second.

Moodswings in bosses are fun, aren’t they?
Yes, it was very needless to say that you found another job in two weeks. It doesn’t matter.
That’s why I’ll never be Facebook friends with bosses and even some co-workers!!
I hope you’ve learned that nothing you post on Facebook is private.
@ stupid, I don’t think it was “needless” for OP to mention another job was found almost instantly. The boss said “nobody will want to hire you” which might have been taken as a threat – especially by a 16 year old – that a bad review was in the works. Bosses all too often want employees to think they have the most wonderful jobs in the world (or at least, the only ones available to anyone so stupid, lazy, fill in the blank) when in fact, the louder that claim is shouted, the less true it’s apt to be.
It’s a good idea NOT to put all of your personal info on Facebook. Thanks for the example of what not to do.
Why on earth would the OP need to be discrete about her employment status? It’s not a bloody relationship. You don’t need to tell your boss your decision before everyone else.
@Lady Anne. I was just agreeing with her.
But you have a point…a very good one.
