I had a part-time job as a video editor, for a backwater college
production company. The boss was a master at handing off
jobs. He spends hours playing Bejeweled and Farmville and watching TV
in his back office.
His favorite dialogue line is a form of “Does that make sense?” Other
variations include “Do you understand that?” or “You get that?” or
“Get that concept?” One time, he was literally sitting next to me and
pointed at a pencil. “Can you hand that pencil to me?” he asked, and
added: “Got that concept?”
After a year and a half, I’d had enough. The final line was when I
was out of town and he sent me an urgent text about a recent project
that read: “COME SEE ME ASAP!” So I drove 30 minutes into town and
found him in his office playing Farmville. Then he turned around in
his chair and asked: “You finished that project, right? Everything
wrapped up? Get that idea?”
Of course it was. And of course I quit working there.

Maybe he was just f’ing with you. Is that clear?
Why didnt you just call him VS driving 30min to see him?
A boss hires people to do the work in a company while a boss runs the company. If you had a problem with doing the work while the boss screwed off, maybe you should have gone to his superior. If he is the owner of the company, start up your own company and hire workers so you can screw off and then your employees can whine about it on here.
The boss sent you a text, you were a half hour away and just drove into work. Why didn’t you just call the boss to see what was so urgent? You made the decision to drive a half hour into work without calling first, so you can be upset with yourself for not being bright enough to think of calling in.
This doesn’t make sense, I don’t understand what I am supposed to get, or what the concept is. I just have no idea…..
I find that when dealing with a person who is constantly adding questions to the end of their sentences, it is helpful and fun to answer them, yes I got that concept. every time. Sometimes they find it so annoying they stop the behavior and sometimes it’s just funny to see them react.
He was just checking your loyalty to him. When you’re under contract, nothing else matters.
If the boss calls to see you ASAP, you have to go to work immediately, simple as that. If you call on the phone, he might see it as not taking your job seriously.
If I were you, I would have asked if there was any other important things that needed to be done since you drove from across town in 30 minutes to get there.
Does anyone even realize that Farmville just celebrated their one year anniversary like 2 months ago? It hasn’t been around a year and a half. I call BS.
I have a neighbor that talks like that. Do you understand?
How horribly you were treated! I feel your pain! You should sue… and stamp your little feet and have a tantrum.
J, it could’ve been Li’l Green Patch or whatever. Doesn’t really matter, anyway – boss was playing games and being a jerk.
For those who are dissing on the poster for driving in – some bosses expect that kind of action. I had a boss who moved heaven and earth trying to find me on my honeymoon (yes, seriously) so that I could go over a month-end report with him (and it wasn’t even my primary responsibility – he was looking for me because our accountant had just walked out….). I don’t think the poster was stupid. I think the poster knew what his idiot boss expected or wanted.
“When you’re under contract, nothing else matters.” WTF, Macrat??? lol
Yeah, sure, nothing else matters. Like not using the brain they hopefully hired you for.
Why would a 7-foot tall Wookie from Kashykk live on Endor with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, that does not make sense.
