In Deep Sh*t

One of my first jobs was at a fast food restaurant. I checked the
weekly schedule and saw that I was marked off two days in a row,
which had never happened in the six months I’d been there. It was
summertime, so I went out of town over night with a friend. When I
got home, there were several voice messages from my boss asking where
the hell I was. I immediately drove over to the place to see what was
going on, but my boss was not there. All my co-workers said I was in
deep shit for missing my shift. I said, “But I wasn’t scheduled
to work!”

After listening to my co-workers relate how my boss had been ranting
and bitching about me in my absence, I was fuming because I had not
done anything wrong and had been a good and loyal employee.

So I walked over to the schedule (which was always done in pencil)
and erased the whole week’s schedule beside my name and wrote in
“off” on every day for the rest of the week. Well, moments later,
the boss walks in. He saw me and asked, “Where the hell were you?” and I
said that I checked the schedule two days ago and you had me marked
“off” both days. He said, “I never give people two days off in
a row. Obviously I made a mistake — but so did you. You should have
called to ask me about it.” He went on to say that my failure to
call and check in with him (about his mistake!) showed that I was
undependable and not a team player and he didn’t want someone like
me working there. He said, “Don’t bother coming back-–you’re
fired!” I just smiled nicely and said, “Well, that’s certainly
your call,” and left.

A little later that evening, I got a call from co-workers who told me
that after I left, he marched over to the schedule to remove my name
and when he saw that I had beaten him to the punch, he nearly popped
a blood vessel from the temper trantrum he threw! They said he
exploded and was screaming, “I don’t *ever* want to see that
bleepity-bleep around here again!”

But you know what they say: He who laughs last, laughs best!

  1. Before I say anything else, I want to say that I think what you did was right and fair. You checked the schedule and saw that you weren’t scheduled for two days in a row. Definetly not your fault. However, I believe that you knew it was a mistake and knew that he never does it. You ever say so yourself. He’s right…you should have called to check and see if it was a mistake or not. But anyways…it is his fault. Glad you beta him to the punch. Good story.

  5. The guy was a prick if he went out of his way to “never” give anyone 2 days off in a row. And it is his responsibility to contact you ahead of time if he later changes the schedule after publishing it

  9. You stated, “…saw that I was marked off two days in a row, which had never happened in the six months I’d been there.” Right there should have been a red flag and the boss should have been questioned about it. The boss made a mistake and should have handled the situation better, but you were just as immature with erasing the rest of your weekly schedule.

    It’s a 50-50 situation on this story.

  11. why the hell would he never schedule someone off for two days in a row? sounds like a pretty shitty job and schedule to begin with. you’re better off.

  19. It was his mistake not yours, nothing to be ashamed of, even if you though he probably made a mistake, you had the right to take what was offered. Next time this a###### will do his job correctly, instead of putting his mistakes on someone else.
Well done for erasing your name before he could do it :)

  21. You should have left it just the way it was and let him find it fro himself.

Then he would have felt like crap for blaming you.

Then you could have gone to the Dept of Labor and blamed him for it all.

    Oh well, Hindsight.

  25. He should have called to verify his boss’s scheduling mistake? Fuck that bullshit, that boss is obviously a power tripping tyrant that hasn’t come to terms with the fact they will never be anything more than a fast food restaurant manager. OP did absolutely, positively nothing wrong and was better off getting out that shitty high school job anyway. I hope you went on to bigger and better things and if you’re a boss now yourself you learned a valuable lesson about how to not be an asshole boss.

  27. My moron ex-boss would get all “hurt” if we didn’t compliment his new haircut, shirt, etc. He’d express this by toying with the schedule, changing our shifts and not telling us until we got to work and discovered we didn’t have to be there, changing our day off and not telling us if he did it the night before. He finally had to do an entire shift all alone one day when someone redid the schedule in a very passable copy of his handwriting.
Your boss was just as wrong and as much of a jerk as mine was. And it is NOT your job to check on your boss’s mistakes. He probably would have bitten your head off for daring suggest he’d made one.

  28. Lee on August 25th, 2010
  29. ummm…stupid, you’re wrong. It is in no way the OP’s responsibility to check on the BOSS’S mistake. It’s fast food, it’s not like they were making tons of money. You work when the schedule says you work. If it says you’re off 2 days in a row, you can bet the farm that I wouldn’t have called to check on it.

OP, you were absolutely right in what you did. Good Job!

  31. Dear stupid…

…thanks for living up to your name. It was NOT this employee’s responsibility to do any more than check the schedule. That responsibility falls on the manager, and no one else!

  37. Dear Greg…

…you’re welcome. I’m glad I could do that for you. Snice I’ve done you a favor, will you do one for me? Go back and read my first three sentences. Then, using logic, read the remaining sentences. When you’re done doing that, enjoy a nice cup of shut-the-fuck-up.

  38. stupid on August 25th, 2010
  39. @Greg. Why the hell do you think an employee should not take ownership of his or her actions. Stupid said s/he thinks what the OP did was right. Can you not read?

  41. Stupid is a troll. If you guys would stop feeding him, he will die.

  42. pirateG on August 25th, 2010
  43. @andrew The OP is passively trying to tell us that he knew it was a mistake before hand and took those two days off anyways, even though two days off never happens there! It is up to the employee to be responsible. And you’re right…it’s fast food so who gives a shit anyways. If you haven’t already, read the first three sentences of my first comment. That should clear it up for you.

  44. stupid on August 25th, 2010
  45. This is NOT his fault. His boss is the manager and in charge of the schedule. It is his responsibility to do the schedule and do it correctly. It is not the responsibility of the employee to second guess or the read the mind of their manager.

    The manager is a dick.

  51. @stupid.

Your stupidity astounds. I find it quite humorous that you contradict yourself, and you get defensive at anyone that points it out. What I and Greg both were commenting on was the last set of sentences that you wrote. Yes, you may have started your inane comment by stating the OP was not at fault, but then you went on to say that he was at fault. What I’m trying to point out, since you clearly do not possess the intellect to figure it out, is that you contradicted yourself and that you’re wrong about the OP “[needing to] have called to check and see if it was a mistake or not”. In no way was the OP at fault. He’s the employee, it’s not his job nor his responsibility to find and/or correct the supervisor’s mistakes. His job is to show up when scheduled, and guess what? He wasn’t scheduled, therefore he didn’t need to show up.

If you’re going to claim that the OP was in the right, then do so. If you’re going to claim the OP was in the wrong, then do so. But please do not claim both, it just makes you look, well like your name suggests, stupid.

  53. I would have taken the days off, and then I would have confirmed that the two days off were listed there as they were before – and taken a pic or a copy. Then, when Boss Man fired me, I’d make a point of walking over to said schedule, showing him the schedule as stated, and finished with “You’ll be hearing from the Labour Board soon regarding my wrongful dismissal, as I have proof that the schedule I followed was correct. I look forward to receiving my free money for you being a moron.” And then I would have enjoyed my paid vacation for a few days and gotten a better job. I suppose in the heat of the moment, OP acted appropriately, but why not take advantage of labour laws when they actually benefit you?

  54. Team Boss on August 26th, 2010
  55. It is not the employee’s job to second-guess the manager for unusually assigning two days off. I agree it might have been wise to do so, just to be sure, but that doesn’t mean it is the employee’s responsibility to do so. Furthermore, what kind of d-bag manager does the schedule in pencil so anybody can change it and there’s no way to prove it? That’s pretty stupid right there. A work schedule should be printed or written in ink and any changes should be initialed so it is clear who approved the change. *That* is how you run a business.

  58. Lady Anne on August 26th, 2010
  59. it isn’t up to the employee to police their boss and make sure the boss doesn’t make mistakes. managers make the schedule, and they need to be responsible and make sure they don’t make mistakes.

i have no idea where you work (or have worked) that you believe it is the employees responsibility to make sure their managers aren’t doing anything wrong…

  63. If an employee just follows what schedule the boss makes, he would probably have counted himself lucky with finding out that he had 2 days off in a row. Part of being a manager is knowing when to gracefully admit a mistake — no one is perfect after all. Besides, that mistake is not that big of a deal. Make the employee work one more day extra to make up for it. It could have saved everyone a lot of headache.

  64. Jaws on August 28th, 2010
  65. I’m still so surprised any of you take anything i say seriously. I mean, seriously? You think I am being real…ever? I am indeed a troll and, being evident that I get so many of you upset, I do a good job.

  66. stupid on August 29th, 2010
  67. It’s stories like this that make it more and more a necessity to either photocopy the schedule as soon as you see it (and say highlight your hours) or take a photo of it so you have proof.
But schedules in pencil is not all that rare. I recall working as a cashier (hence my name) and our weekly schedule was also done in pencil. That way if someone called in sick, they could erase the hours and write in SICK. I can’t think of anytime that my hours were changed behind my back. Then again, I didn’t work for a jerk like the OP did.
