My first job out of college was in media at a large agency. I was
shuffled around a couple times, working on different accounts and
with different teams and in that time, I was never properly trained.
More or less, I was thrown to the wolves and screamed at if something
wasn’t done right, but when I asked for further training, I didn’t
Fast forward about 5 months and I’m finally settled onto 3 accounts
with a supervisor and her boss.
The first couple of months go great, I’m picking things up and being
praised for my work. As we gather more accounts and the “busy season”
picks up, we’re putting in 16 hour days. Granted, my hours were
9AM-5:30PM, but typically no one left before 6:30PM as it was frowned
upon. To add insult to injury, we were never compinsated for our over
time as the CEO deemed it “part of our job description.”
Fast forward another few months to my 1 year review. We were exepcted
to review ourselves then compare our personal review to that of our
supervisors. All the while I had been praised for doing well and when
I asked if there was anything I could improve on, the answer was “not
at this time”. Well, I’m called into HR about 3 weeks later to
“discuss my review”. Long story short I was bashed and ripped apart,
with them going as far to say I’m not picking anything up, my work is
shoddy at best and I don’t dress well for client meetings. Keep in
mind I’ve previously asked both supervisors how I should dress and I
usually showed up to meetings in dress slacks, a buttoned down shirt
and heels (same attire as them), but for some reason mine wasn’t
I stayed another 7 months for which 2 of the months I was “informed I
was on probation and if my work didn’t improve, I’d be let go.” I met
with my supervisors to go through what I could do better and all I
got was, “you’re doing fine.” Super helpful! I was given more
clerical work and my bosses put me to work as their “gopher” (i.e.
having me pick up things from the printer when they can slide their
chair to it).
Needless to say I put in my 2 weeks notice (to which they were
shocked) and I am now happily employed at a new company where my
hours really ARE 9AM-5:30PM, my bosses are GREAT and I’m recognized
for my hard work.
