Not For Me
On my first day of work at a truck rental place, I was handed a
check and told my first task that day would be to go downtown and
bail out my coworker, who was in jail for sexually assualting the
last female co-worker that worked with him.
My first day was my last.

My best guess would be that the co-worker in jail was a close friend or relative of the boss. Would explain why the job would bail them out, and why they weren’t fired.
Practical joke on someone’s first day, maybe?
Keep in mind that an arrest is not the same as a conviction. The boss may well have believed his employee was innocent. However, asking a new employee to handle this task was highly inappropriate. I would have quit also.
