I worked for a family owned company one summer that took tourists out
for boat rides.
Once a man called up and said, “I’m Joe (last name) and I get free
boat tours!” I responded, “I’m sorry sir, I’ve been given specific
guidelines on discounts and was not informed of anybody receiving
free boat tours. I can save you a spot in the boat if you’d like and
you can work out whether or not you go on for free with the women who
sell the tickets. I’m not authorized to promise you that.” The man
replied “But I’m Joe (last name)!” The next day my boss went up to
the office and said “What the h*** is wrong with you? Joe (last name)
gets free boat tours!” Apparently I’m supposed to let strange people
on for free or get yelled at.

Perhaps you should have put “Joe” on hold and called to the ticket office and ask whether or not he gets free boat rides. It would have solved your problem. By the way, I get free boat rides, too. Go ask someone.
Didn’t occur to you to check with someone above you before pissing off a customer? Dumbass.
You did the right thing. If the boss lets Joe Smith have free boat rides, then the boss has to let you know. What did he expect? You to have ESP?
You couldn’t have put him on hold and confirmed this with your boss?
What a terrible job that must be.
Been in that situation. It’s up to your boss to let you know ahead of time who is allowed freebies. In those situations, you inform them that you were never properly informed as to who was allowed the exception.
I would be nice if they let you know this in advance. Or at least polished your crystal ball once a week.
joe mama???
I agree you handled the situation properly. After being yelled at, I would have said to your boss, “In order to make sure I never make this mistake again, please provide me with a wirtten list of all the people you’ve promised free tours to in case my telepathic powers fail.”
Boring story. So your boss didn’t tell you that one customer gets free rides. Big deal.
I think Joe was your boss. He played a joke on you.
once again….why does everyone get so pissed at the authors if they don’t feel that their story wasn’t about the worst/job ever…This is a BLOG! ppl wanna share their stories for ppl like me to enjoy them. Lay off!!
@The Advocate and Miles ^^^
My balls feel like they are getting wisdom teeth.
to everyone who said that the OP pissed off a customer. you’re stupid. a customer PAYS for services and then takes thier money elswhere to hurt the company if they treat the customer badly. this man was most likely a friend who didnt pay for anything!! the op handled this perfectly and joe shoulda just chilled and worked it out when they got there!
My name is Toasty O’s and I get free boat tours!
I am with you Emily. Is everyone that responds to this site some sort of aspiring critic?
@emilyG:
There was no sarcasm in my comment. I was being completely serious.
crappy duties + crappy customers + crappy boss = terrible job.
I suppose I need to install some “tone check” software to stop incorrect inferences in the future.
What the hell is your problem EVERYONE knows joe gets free tours!
You idiot! That was joe nambla, from the nambla group! If joe comes up to a hooker and says, I get free head, then Joe GETS FREE HEAD!! What is wrong with you…
Because in many of the posts I’ve read here, there are always several trolls (probably Managers themselves) who say the OP is full of it. Maybe if there were an equivalent site for Managers they’d go there to post “That’s my employee” stories, then we could go troll that.
I’m thinking the OP was told that Joe gets free boat tours but was just a shitty employee and forgot.
Waaa waaa waaaa
Its not the Managers fault he forgot to tell the emploeye about “JOE” hes probaly to busy be a manager. How was it not common senes to ask ur manager about “JOE” an his free boat rides.
