Pencil It In

Many years ago I was a young stupid high school student who believed
everyone, even bosses, was really good deep down, and no one was ever
truly malicious.

Then I got a job at a casual dining restaurant, and the owners did me
the favor of changing that. I had some unexpected medical problems and
had to take time off for doctors’ visits. I always gave at least a
week’s notice, but would routinely get yelled at for missing shifts.
After that I always made sure I watched the owners write my requests
on the calendar.

I had to take a full week off for family business, and I told the
owners a full month ahead of time. I watched them write down the
dates on the calendar. Then when the schedule came out, I had shifts
every day of my week off. The owners told me I lied to them about
requesting time off, and showed the calendar for proof. My request
was there, but clearly had been erased.

The next job I had, I made sure the scheduler only used pens.

  1. A week off for “family business”? What does this have to do with your medical condition? There are “requests” for time off and there are “requirements” to give employees time off. Sounds to me like you missed a lot of work and they were frustrated with you, hoping you’d quit because of this. It’s not right that managers get angry with people for missing work for a legitimate medical condition, but I would imagine it is still frustrating to them.

Your bosses were jerks about it, but remember what you admitted in the first line: you were a young, stupid high school student. I’m glad you grew up and moved on (hopefully).

  5. No matter where you work, if you take a lot of time off (including time that was approved) you risk losing your job because you’re unreliable. I’m not saying that you taking time off wasn’t justified, but unfortunantley perception is taken as a reality to a lot of people.

  7. unfortunately, stupid makes a valid point. most bosses aren’t interested in actual truth. perception is usually more powerful then facts. missing too much work, justified or not, pisses bosses off. depending on the state or locality you work in, business laws may actually be favorable to the business. if that’s the case, you could be screwed over easily & not have any recourse.

  11. As the above two posters said, a lot of requested time off, whether medical/family/personal looks unprofessional and makes you unreliable.

Did you bosses do the right thing by calling you a liar and erasing your requests off the calendar? No. They should have just cut your hours to the minimum or politely told you to start looking for a new job.

  13. Maybe it’s just because you were a high school dolt but people just don’t get to tell their bosses when they’re going and not going to work. You may or may not get personal days, you may or may not get vacation time but that’s it. ‘Family Business’? Let me guess; Disneyland?

  15. They gave her the time off, that wasn’t the point. The point was they erased a previously approved time off and lied about it.

  17. I think its crazy when emploiers don’t give part time high school kids more flexable schedules. Im not saying ask off every weekend and make ur schedules around parties or anything crazy like that but u are in high school and you have other things going on. I do agree requesting off a lot does look unprofessional, however, they have to understand if they are going to hire high school kids they are going to ask off. Its like jobs in college towns not hiring college students bc they ask off for semester breaks.

This included when I moved halfway across the country and would ask for time off to go home to visit during holidays. Why do you think that was? Because during the time I worked I was always punctual, reliable, funny, and came in for extra shifts when called. No legitimate business is going to hassle you about time off if you’re a good employee. It’s the crap ones that they give a hard time to.
