Show Me Potato Salad!

When I was 16, I was a waitress at a well known buffet style
restaurant. Part of my job included making sure my section of the
buffet stayed clean and full of food.

Upon cleaning my part of the buffet, I noticed a few dead flies in
the potato salad so I removed the tray and headed to the back to
empty it into the trash.

My boss saw me with an almost full try of potato salad and asked what
I was doing. When I explained, he quickly reprimanded me for being
wasteful and grabbed a spoon and proceeded to removed the dead flies
from the potato salad.

He then told me to place the tray back on the buffet. Later on, he
called me into his office to discuss what had taken place earlier on
in the day.

He told me it was completely unacceptable to toss out an entire tray
of food for a few dead flies. He then asked me to not mention his
money saving trick to the owners.

The whole situation turned my stomach so I ended up quitting shortly
after that!

  3. And of course you failed to report the idiot’s business practices and allowed him to continue to risk the health of the patrons. YOU’RE MY HERO!

  5. Trick? I’m sure 99% of restaurants wouldn’t waste a whole tray, dish, etc. of food for a fly or a few flies. Not saying that it isn’t gross but it wouldn’t surprise me.

  15. Should have quit on the spot! If a restaurant manager or boss of any sort goes out of their way to break food safety rules/laws there is no need to keep working there because who the hell knows what else they may be doing.

  17. When someone asks you to do something dishonest don’t do it. As soon as he said not to tell the owners you should have.

  19. And by not mentioning this to the owners, you’re better than he is how??

  21. Was this restaurant in Maryland, by any chance? I once found a fly in the Parmesan shaker at a steak house salad bar. It had obviously been there when the top was put on, because the holes were too small for the critter to escape. Rather than create a scene, I took the shaker into the kitchen and handed it to one of the waiters. He unscrewed the top, watched the insect fly away, wordlessly replaced the top and handed me the shaker. I unscrewed the top, dumped the cheese into the trash can and wordlessly handed HIM the empty jar.

  25. Flies lay eggs! You can’t just remove the flies because you can’t necessarily see whether they have laid eggs in the food. And since flies carry diseases, that is a primo health hazard.

The other question is, given that flies can happily eat manure and all kinds of trash, what in the heck was in the potato salad that killed the flies?!

  27. Did they charge extra for the maggots in the potato salad?

  31. Who cares? You mouth breathers must eat flies all the time. The little fuckers probably just fly in and set up shop while your mouth is agape 24-7.
