I took over a new store in a mall that was very high end. The company
was paying outragous rent and making no money, my job was to fix the
problem. I started work on the chaos and had it coming along nicely.
I scheduled an inventory, hired staff that were eager and willing to
work, and in the first month actually showed us breaking even. Soon
after we starting making loads of money and I was working with an
amazing staff. Life was good.
As part of my hiring package I was given a weeks vacation after only
6 months of employment. Payroll informed me that it was the end of
the fiscal year and they wanted to clear the books, aka take my
vacation now or lose it. I sent in the request, it was granted and I
took my week off.
On the last day of my vacation I get a call from my mom to inform me
that my grandpa, who I was very close to, has died suddenly during
the night. The funeral would be Tuesday and I needed to fly home. On
top this I had found out I was pregnant and had been waiting until my
grandpa’s upcoming birthday to tell him he was going to be a
great-grandpa for the first time.
I call my store to make sure they can cover Tuesday, I’d work the
Monday morning and be back on Wednesday to close. Then I call my
regional manager to let him know what was going on…I’m told that I
can’t have extra days off because I just was on vacation. I explain
about my grandpa, there should be a few days bereavement I could
take. I didn’t even want the three days, just one to go say my good
byes. He told me to stop being greedy and that if I wasn’t at work on
Tuesday I’d be fired. I remember saying I didn’t schedule my vacation
around his death, it was unexpected. I was told “You should think
about that next time” and the line disconnected.
I went to the funeral. I came back to my staff freaking out because
the regional manager had been in the store when they got there in the
morning to open. He had loaded up a cargo van with merchandise,
destroyed the stock room and took a lot of the payroll files and
sales records.
Later that week I got phone calls from the home office requesting
payroll records from two years previous. A very odd request but I
told them that the RM had taken them.
Soon he was back in my store to let me know that:
-I was unreliable, as I didn’t fax reports on time. He had taken the
fax machine…
-Lied to people at home office about him taking the records. They
were never seen again.
-That my being pregnant was an inconvenience. I NEVER missed work
while I was employed there and had people trained to take my place
while I was in the hospital.
-I was a slacker for trying to take advantage of my vacation over a
made up death of a relative. He had me fax home office the obituary,
but forgot that.
I was fired on the spot. He brought in a new manager that same day.
The store closed after 2 months, it turned into a dive with empty
shelves staffed with poorly dressed employees always on the phone.
The business went bankrupt 3 months after that.
It might of had something to do with a crazy as hell regional manager
who apparently schedules the deaths of his loved ones so they don’t
interfere with his vacation plans.

I’m getting tired of these and “I got fired and then the business failed because I’m so special” stories.
shitty management at that company that obviously has franchises since you had a regional manager. So, by you being fired led to the entire business to go bankrupt???? Or did you just embellish that.
Sounds like you needed a better job anyway. And I’m sorry about your Grandfather.
Being told that part of your reason for being terminated was associated with your pregnancy was a big mistake on the part of the RM. I would suggest you call the corporate office and tell them what the RM said and that you are requesting at least 8 weeks severance pay and continuation of benefits during that time to help you land on your feet. If not, you would be seeking a private attorney for the RM terminating you based on a certified medical condition (I’m sure your state has Pregnancy Discrimination laws, and if not, there are Federal Laws that apply to this as well).
I am so sorry about the situation with your grandfather. My wife and I just found out that she is pregnant as well. We are actually driving home tomorrow to tell my parents and grandparents. So, this really hit home with me.
So the entire company went bankrupt three months after you left? Sure.
And exactly, how do you know about the poorly dressed staff that spend the entire day on the phone unless you’re still visiting the store? Creepy.
If only the company knew how awesome you were and that you alone were the lynch-pin holding the entire enterprise together!
I don’t believe you.
Mmmm, sounds like he knew the company was about to go belly up. But still he was trying to violate The Family and Medical Leave act which is federal law. Sorry about all your hard work down the drain! I know what it takes to make a store turn around like you did.
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
ANOTHER BUSINESS DOWN THANKS ENTIRELY TO THE LOSS OF ONE PERFECT AND FLAWLESS EMPLOYEE WHO SINGLE HANDEDLY SAVED THE BUSINESS
SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
That is a truly messed up experience.
Watch…the Trolls will eat you up anyways. They always find something.
Never worked with payroll records before and not sure exactely what is in them but i would be watching my credit information closely.
Called it… (this site just takes forever to moderate the comments…ironic since so many really messed up comments make it through anyways.)
This is an interesting story. Trolls, get lost.
Oh you called it Luckster!
I call you a raving fuckwad…..a very sad, lame, little fuckwad.
To the posters assuming the OP meant the entire corporation went under, that’s not how I read it. It sounded to me like that one particular store went out of business. Anyway, this may be the first story claiming that the business was shut down after the OP left that is actually believable.
I actually think this person is telling the truth. Some of you may think that a workplace cannot be turned around by one person but I assure you it can and the effects of that person being fired will surely ripple through the entire company.
OP I think you’ve had a lucky escape! You clearly know what you’re doing in terms of sorting out a business that’s in a mess and your skills will be welcomed with open arms elsewhere. Just be glad you got out of there when you did and i’m sure you’ll have a fantastic job in the future.
Ignore people on this site who like to be mean. It’s here to vent your anger and you’re not going to gain anything from making a story up so I truly believe your story.
@Jeff – remember; ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’ Karma’s a bitch.
