I started a new part time job as a night receptionist for a car
dealership. A week after I was hired and JUST finished training, the
full time receptionist quit. Her replacement was my worst nightmare.
She was told her position title was head cashier and took it to
extremes. She told our boss I spend too much time playing internet
games, (I work from 3pm-9pm m-f and don’t have many calls after 6)
and when the director saw no problem with it she took it upon herself
to block the internet. When I came in that day I asked why it wasn’t
working correctly and she pretended she had no idea. But when she
needed it for a web program to help a customer I saw her type in the
password and BAM. Internet access. I ended up watching her type the
password a few times and figured it out.
In the meantime I found things to occupy my time before she left so
she wouldn’t realize. One day I brought a book to work and laid it on
my desk.
Boss: “You read?”
Me: “Yes. Gives me something to do when I’m not busy.”
Boss: “You just don’t look like the kind of girl who would read an
actual book.”
That’s just some of it. Also, in the 3 months we worked together she
never once got my name correct. However, I did get my revenge. I got
in good with the director and he saw how poor her work ethic was and
how she interacted with customers and coworkers. One morning I got a
phone call at 8 am asking me to come in and cover since they would be
letting her go. As she was walking out I sat down and laughed. A week
later, on payday, she called for our HR and i had answered the phone.
She thought it was a replacement and was stunned when I told her it
was me.

Aww, your boss expected you to work and earn your income instead of slacking off. How horrible for you.
You know….nevermind. Just forget it.
Granted, this isn’t truly a “bad boss” story, but it still is funny! It’s always good to read when the tide rolls the right way and the bad apples get put out into the sun to rot.
She was a condescding bitch, wasn’t she? But I’m confused. Was it the receptionist who said all this to you and got fired? Was the receptionist your boss? Because she told “our boss” that you played interent games all day. So…explain some?
When you’re at work…you’re there to work, not play computer games. I would have blocked internet access to you as well.
Ok let me get this straight you have a problem with her having some decent work ethics? You sit around playing on the internet at work when you can find something constructive to do and your mad at her for putting an end to your shit? Its completely obvious that your the peice of shit emplyee in this one and you should have been let go.
Why didn’t you just tell your boss(es) that she tampered with company software? Or am I just an ass that way?
I never worked at a car dealer dealership, so I’m not that familiar with the cashier postion. I’m just guessing it’s not like any other cashier postion. You are taking peoples payments after they work a deal with the salesmen/saleswoman for the car. But restricting the internet sounds like a policy only the owner of the business should be doing. She may be LEAD cashier, but thats like someone being LEAD bag boy.
My evil sister-in-law was like this. These kind of people are A) miserable with their own lives for some reason and B) want to think they’re superior to everybody else (but normally are not). So they can only be happy by making other people more miserable than they are. They create their own relative happiness by lowering everybody else’s.
And they’re some of the most messed up people I have ever met too.
I am SO glad this B*tch got her just-desserts! I pity whoever has to work with her now…
Someone has seen fit to steal my name….Anyway – So she’s a bad boss because she expected you to work for your pay as opposed to being paid to play games? And because you chose to play games instead of finding something constructive to do, I’m sure you probably do look like someone who doesn’t read…
OP said she got very few phone calls after 6 PM. You can’t MAKE the phone ring, and at least playing computer games gives your mind more of a workout than staring at the brown fabric walls in your cubicle. I’ve work switchboards plenty of places (I’m a temp) and once I’ve offered the stuff envelopes or something, nobody has *ever* said anything to me about being online.
If the “head cashier” was really concerned about “work ethics” she could have found some filing or something for OP to do. And the crack about “reading an actual book”? She was just being contemptable. Kinda like Hawk and Heather.
As someone who has been out of work a while (like many Americans these days) losing your job can be a horrible and embarassing experience. I think it was totally out of line to laugh at her when she was fired. If I was your boss and saw that, I’d seriously consider replacing you as well. That’s not the kind of attitude I’d want from a person dealing directly with my customers.
Why does “got in good with” sound like something sexual?
Hear hear George Johnson and TheKillingWords. Re the comments about “doing your job” or “when you’re at work you’re there to work”: What? So it’s better for someone to sit around doing absolutely nothing, than to play a few internet games? If it’s not interfering with your work, surfing the net and playing games will actually make you more productive when you do have something to do. Boredom, on the other hand… Sheesh.
dude, i seriously think i know you, is that you jacki? really? sounds like she sucks, being ‘lead cashier’ shouldn’t have gone to her head so much! and if she was worried about you not having work she could’ve given you some if there was actually anything to do. but it seems like there wasnt much to do so…. who cares?
I’m still trying to understand why a car dealership is open until 9 PM. Who buys a car at 8:00 at night?
If your job is just to answer the phone, I see nothing wrong with you surfing the net or playing computer games between calls, but a better approach would be to ask if there is other work (filing, preparing mailings, etc.) you can do during that time. That’s how you get ahead – by showing initiative.
@ Heather and Hawk. OP said she never got many calls after 6 PM. You can’t just *will* the phone to ring; people have to actually call in.
Playing computer games or reading an “actual book” (Lordy! Talk about condescending!) gives your brain more exercise than staring at the brown fabric walls of your cubicle. I work as a temp, so do a lot of switchboard work. I always ask if there is filing or envelope stuffing or something to do, and if not, I get on the computer. No one has ever complained about it. Instant mind-switch from Zuma’s Revenge to “How may I help you?”.
okay people who are calling out the OP for playing computer games…when there is nothing to do are you supposed to sit and stare at a wall? it’s not like she was playing games and ignoring customers…idiots…
I agree with the commenters saying work time is for working, not slacking and playing on the internet, but I think the point is that the OP was the night receptionist and worked during a time when any customers were few and far between, and there wasn’t much else to keep her busy.
Also, the director apparently saw no problem with OP spending time on the internet. If the director did have a problem, it would be a totally different matter, but it was the “head cashier” who took it upon herself to block the internet AFTER the director said they saw no problem. The “head cashier”, like George Johnson said, is probably one of those people who feels like in order to make themselves happy, must make everyone else miserable.
Some of the assclowns who respond to these posts seem to really want to just judge people. She was a receptionist, a night receptionist at that. The primary function of that job is to greet people, answer the phone, and maybe occasionally rings someone up. The very nature of the job comes with down time, and reading a magazine or playing on the computer, as long as it did not interfere with her duties would be acceptable.
How many of the trolls are posting on here while they are at work?
ahahaha gold star for Food For Thought! that’s a very good question indeed.
Whether the phone rings or not she’s there to work. She can find something else to do or ASK what else she can do. I’m sure when she was hired part of her job description wasn’t “play computer games during down time”.
And I’m not at work. I actually do work at work.
I’m a part-time receptionist for an almost non existant reception area. I am at work right now. Phone hasn’t rung for 2 hours.
Sure is fun staring at the wall.
You tards’ don’t know what its like to have NOTHING to do. Having work makes time go MUCH faster, if I had something – ANYTHING to file or whatnot, I would…with a big fucken smile on my face, you betcha.
Bottom line: Someone has to be there incase a phone rings. Shitty job but someones gota do it.
Long ago I worked in a bank. The receptionist would sit, doing her nails, reading magazines etc whenever it was slow, no problem.
When she got promoted, she banned reading material etc at the front desk…..
Hypocrite!
I’ll bet you thought I was going to say B1+c#
To the jackasses screaming at her for not working…..what the fuck was she supposed to do while not answering calls?? Unless they gave her other work, was she supposed to just sit there and masturbate for a while?
That’s what an evening receptionist does! Fucking morons!
There is always something to do. I used to work in a store where on a good day i would have one customer and hour – one.
I don’t buy this – there is nothing to do so lets take personal time bull. Not cool. In the interim you could be reading upon and studying the product or brand you represent. Working on a proposal to get that phone to ring a little more. Take initiative and create work.
I’m at work right now. Not doing much except reading “that’s my boss” and drinking coffee. Later I may surf for some porn and rub one out in the breakroom/kitchen. I’ve been employed here for just over 10 years. Not a bad gig for the most part.
You were playing computer games- and how did it go down? Did you say something normal like “It’s okay to do this when there are no calls right?” Or did you feel passive aggressive because your lack of productivity is obvious and you knew you were screwing around and get belligerent ” It’s slow!”
A lot of the complaints on here are like children complaining about their week end parents and how they want to fire them. Immature and vindictive.
Let me guess the boss that made you feel good about yourself when they gave another woman the ax was a guy?
I’m guessing by the editing he was. Yeah you’re real superior. You had a dude make the mean lady stop bullying you when all you want is for the customers to be happy. You’ll be out of a job when a skinnier, meaner girl with daddy issues starts working there.
A lot of people in my generation feel like they should be paid for nothing. ” It’s not her fault the phone didn’t ring.” If you have no work ethic and you don’t want to rise above your position- yes feel free to sit there doing the bare minimum a human brain can handle without causing your brain to atrophy. If there are no calls when I’m waiting for a sale I hand out cards at the bus stop, I would advertise online- tell my friends!
If you work there for doing nothing and you don’t feel a little bad- yeah you are screwing up. Unless it is your first job.
Again and again on this site- some angry, ignorant guy or girl with a crappy attitude wonders how a “dumb” person got promoted over them then they have some back stabbing story about how they lie in wait to ruin their lives and make them unemployed over a technicality sometimes not nearly as bad as the “stupid shit” they get disciplined for. Jesus.
