The Big Montana

When I was 14, I got my first part-time job at a national fast-food
chain. I have always been a bit of a perfectionist, even when
shilling fries and roast beef. So at my first 6-month review, my boss
(the store manager) raved about my work, gave me a 50 cent raise (the
most you can get at one time), and told me to keep it up. I did. But
somewhere between that 6 month review and the next one (after working
there for a year) she got wind that I am Jewish. When we sat down for
the year review, she denied me a raise. I asked why, obviously, and
she replied “Well….um, this is a Christian nation. Your people
don’t belong here.”

I would end the story on that delightful note, but the funny part is
that I indignantly stormed out of the restaurant after yelling “I
quit!” only to have to wait outside for 20 minutes for my mom to come
pick me up. Quitting with a bang is hard to do when you aren’t old
enough for a driver’s license.

  1. Good for you! What a f*ck up your ex-boss must be. I would have reported her – that is against the Charter of Human Rights in Canada, it must be in the States, too. SUE THEIR PANTS OFF!

  2. Betta on May 31st, 2010
  3. Yes, sure, that really happened.

Well, what REALLY happened is she found your stash of gay porn, with the pages stuck together.

  4. Tardola on May 31st, 2010
  5. Oh. Wow.
It’s amazing how in the 21st century, people can still be so backwards!
And, um, Jesus was Jewish. And the LAST thing he’d want is for his own followers to practice the kind of persecution that lead to his death. Your ex-boss is a sick, ignorant individual.

  6. Rachel on May 31st, 2010
  7. Please, PLEASE tell me you sued. Holy crap.

  8. You gotta be effin' kidding me on May 31st, 2010
  9. I hope this is a made up story or otherwise you are incredibly dumb. If your manager really denied you a raise because you are Jewish, you could have sued that company back to the stone ages.

  10. David on May 31st, 2010
  11. Um wow, you know she can’t do that right. If this is a real story, I’d expect you to take legal action. Fast-food chain or not, it’s still discrimination. At the very least, reported it to corporate.

  12. VaqAttack on May 31st, 2010
  13. you could have walked to another area – a corner store, or something like that, that way, you’re ‘leaving with a bang’ would have been a true ‘bang.’ and yes, you should sue the store.

  14. AllanVS on May 31st, 2010
  15. Being 14 when that happened, I highly doubt he/she would have thought about sueing. Besides, how can you prove the manager said that?

  16. Jamie on May 31st, 2010
  17. I call BS on this story. No way, no how!

  18. La La on May 31st, 2010
  19. I would have called corporate. They can’t deny someone a job (or raise, or housing, etc.) based on religion. PLUS most of the “founding fathers” of America are better described as deists that Christians.

  20. RedneckGoth on May 31st, 2010
  21. The manager will need to provide a LEGITIMATE reason why such an employee was denied a raise to corporate. The employee should report the incident to the corporate office and the department of labor and file a complaint. The dept of labor is REQUIRED to investigate any written, filed complaint.

  22. c16621 on May 31st, 2010
  23. I agree with your manager. You wanted Israel so badly, go live in it.

  24. Shutup Man on May 31st, 2010
  25. How could you get a job if you’re only 14? Anyway, that’s a jerk move on that boss’s part and I’d report it to the labor board.

  26. Kendall on May 31st, 2010
  27. I am the original poster of this story. It is 100% true, and after getting advice from my mother, (Jamie is right, legal knowledge is not a 15 year old’s strong suit), we decided to take it to corporate. We talked with the franchise owner, and he said since there was no proof of her saying it (it wasn’t in writing), he couldn’t take it any further. She was later replaced as store manager…..and by later I mean one year.

And I am not even going to grace shutup man’s comment with a response.

  29. I’m just wondering where you live because unless you get special permissions, you can’t work in the US until you’re 16.

  30. Jami on June 1st, 2010
  31. You can legally work before age 16 as long as you get a work permit (filled out by parents, school, etc). Everyone I went to school with got jobs around the same age.

  32. olive on June 1st, 2010
  33. I hate people that just bounce form story to story, dogging the author and claiming the story is fake, but this story has to be fake.

First off – employed at 14? I don’t know of any chain that hires anyone under 16 (plus there are laws against it). Second, if this story is real and you didn’t sue, you’re an idiot. Even if you didn’t understand the whole discrimination aspect, your parents certainly would have. I can only assume you told them why you got fired.

  34. David on June 1st, 2010
  35. @Jami Maybe that would be true in Jamiland… I had a job at 14 to save up money for a car where in the law does it say you cant work until 16?

  36. D on June 1st, 2010
  37. @ Jami
You can work when you’re 14, you have restricted hours *usually off by 6 or 8 or something on a school night* And can work only very few hours a week.

  38. Mike on June 1st, 2010
  39. @Jami: In my state, you only have to be 15. It varies.

  40. Cass on June 1st, 2010
  41. Sorry Jami — but you can work in the US at the age of 14. There are hour restrictions placed on it, I believe a 14/15 year old can only work ten to fifteen hours per week.

And yes, I live in the US.

  42. nan on June 1st, 2010
  43. You can work in the US in some states if you are 14. You apply for a permit.
I had something similar happen to me a couple of decades ago. I worked for a group of chip designers in silicon valley. They found out I wasn’t Jewish and put me in a back room with a working computer and non-working switchboard. I had nothing to do all day but surf the web and talk to my friends on the one working phone. After about four months of realizing they were paying me for nothing – they laid me off. Idiots! They were Jews from Israel and they were very mean in a classless way. I wasn’t allowed to eat in the lunchroom or use the restroom (there was one in the back room I had to use – so I got the bathroom all to myself, since the back room had a separate entrance).

  44. onhonono on June 1st, 2010
  45. Actually that’s incorrect…you can work in the U.S at 14 but have to adhere to certain hour requirements, school days, etc.

  46. Ryan on June 1st, 2010
  47. Not true, Jami. It depends on the state, and some states (WI, for instance), do allow 14 year olds to hold down jobs.

  48. ROFLRawr on June 1st, 2010
  49. You can work at 14 most places in the US. You need to get working papers from your school, and can only work from 4-7 PM on weekdays, and limited hours on the weekends during the school years. Then, during the summer, you can’t work past a certain time at night…I don’t know what time that is, but there is a curfew.

  50. Julia on June 1st, 2010
  51. you guys are retarded. You can work at 14. its just very hard to find a place that will hire yu. but i worked at quiznos in denver colorado when i was 14 this was in 2002, so yes it is possible to work under the age of 16. however i could only work a maximum of 20 hrs a week and i had to get a work permit….so dont call her a liar, at least on that part.

  52. erika on June 2nd, 2010
  53. sure you can work when you are 14, but there are restrictions to what jobs you can perform, especially in a foodservice operation. Aside from mopping the floors and cleaning the toilets, it was against the company’s policies for this person to be using a slicer and/or deep fat fryer at the age of 14.

  54. paone on June 2nd, 2010
  55. Im sure you can get a job when your 14, but only certain ones & it all depends on States ect..

+ this could be 10-30 years ago!

& Yes i would quit if they were racist to me too!

  56. Louise on June 3rd, 2010
  57. In the province of canada I live in which is being run by right wing Christian Conservatives children can work at age 13 provided they have a note from their parents. it was practically the first thing this government put into law when they came into power. They can even work in the kitchens of bars, pubs anywhere that serves alcohol.
As Shutupman take your own advice and SHUT UP. You are too ignorant to be posting let along breathing.

  58. Kate Sarginson on June 6th, 2010
  59. Clearly the OP’s boss was a jerk. What strikes me even more are some of the anti-semitic comments made here. I added comments to another post in response to racist comments posted. What’s going on with this site? Why are there so many bigoted comments posted all of a sudden? Are these people just stirring things up? Or, do they really mean all of the hateful things they are saying? I can’t believe we’ve come to this.

  60. Mary on June 6th, 2010
  61. Actually, you can work in some states as young as 12. Of course, there are limitations on both hours and type of work.

  62. just me on June 7th, 2010
  63. Two things
#1 I’m surprised that you could find someone to hire you at the age of 14, I’m fifteen myself and I have a hard time finding work.
#2 Mary calm down for goodness sakes girl! There is one trollin’ asshole on this entire comment thread and he isn’t going to crash the site!

  64. Paul on June 7th, 2010
  65. Racist people bug the crap out of me! I’m glad you quit!

  66. Hanna on June 15th, 2010
  67. Chances are, the OP is too young to have been one of the active Zionists that pushed for Israel. (I personally don’t care one way or the other where anyone of any religious background chooses to live)

  68. Heidi on June 19th, 2010
  69. For all the idiots out there, suing is pointless without a witness. Happens all the time. My wife once had a boss when she was in her early 20s who would peep down her dress, and actually told her once that he wanted to try her out on his new desk. She quit because she knew it was her word against his (and northern FL is still not too enlightened). Later she found that a co-worker threatened to sue the guy, same reason, and he just about defecated Twinkies.

  70. Bob on June 24th, 2010
  71. I personally want to apologize for that woman saying that you didn’t belong here because it was a “Christian Nation” That just makes all Christians look bad, she’s just a loony. If she actually thought about; America is known as a melting pot; It was founded on Christians principles, but people usually don’t describe it as a christian nations; Helllloooo the native americans were here first.I am a christian and have never thought that anyone doesn’t belong, you can’t change who you are… so I am so sorry for that; Some of the most succesful people in america have come from other countries. Good for you for getting out of there by the way!
