I’ve worked for a major department store on and off for about seven
years in the lingerie department. I’ve worked through at least ten
managers and all of them were bad at something and left or was fired
fairly quickly. The Demon Woman? Nope. Going on four years and she’s
still there. She did at least four mean, offensive, or just plain
ridiculous things every day, but the story that really stands out in
my mind was the one that almost got me fired.
I had a couple of regular customers whose preferences and sizes I’d
memorized because I helped them so frequently. One of them came in
looking for a black strapless bra for that weekend and knowing both
her size and my inventory I told her flat out that we didn’t have any
but I thought she should check one of our competitors who I know has a
much better extended size collection, needing them myself.
Out of nowhere the manager sprung on me and my customer and with a
noticeably raised voice said “HOW DARE YOU REFER A LOYAL CUSTOMER TO
THE ENEMY? COME HERE MA’AM we have an entire WALL of black strapless
bras.” After about a thirty minute search during which I ably helped
other customers my manager concluded that they didn’t have any in her
size. She spent another twenty minutes pestering my customer into
placing an order for it to be shipped, even going so far as to lie
about the shipping costs. Despite being told over and over and over
again that the customer needed the bra sooner than the shipping could
happen and also insisting that she felt more comfortable working with
me specifically, my manager refused to let her leave.
Finally my customer just sort of made a break for it. My manager’s
parting words on the incident? “THAT’S how you handle a customer!”
God, I hope not. I got my first negative review in the history of
working for the company and the manager was gunning for me to be
fired. It wasn’t until my customer called the manager personally and
complained about my manager that my job was saved. But WHY IS SHE
STILL WORKING THERE?
