I work as a nurse in a long term care facility.
Upon waking up, I felt a bit off color, but decided to suck it up
and head into work, knowing that being short staffed is no fun. I
struggle along for about 45 minutes, and then I do it: I vomit, in
front of one of my residents. Lucky for me, I caught it in my hand,
which caused it to backsplash down my scrub front.
Covered in vomit, I left the room and asked a coworker to cover for
me, while I continued puking up breakfast. While heaving into the
toilet, I peed my pants (I’ve had two children, and bladder surgery-
it happens!)
Now covered in both vomit and urine, I go to my boss to let her know
that I’m soiled and can’t possibly continue to work.
Her response? “You’re not allowed to leave until we get someone to
replace you.”
She made me continue to do personal care in direct contact with residents, while covered in urine and puke, wearing a johnny shirt over my clothes. An hour later, when still no one had come in to takeover, I burst into tears, in front of some of my residents. I then get hauled into her office, and sent home for ‘unprofessional behaviour’.
I tendered my resignation two days later.

you should have contacted her supervisor/ owner/ state labor board/ health dept. someone else.
Her a** would have been in trouble
If you can’t handle a bit of whiz and spit-up, then you have no business working in a nursing environment. ESPECIALLY with old farts. Go find something else to do, like maybe become a whiny assed coffeeshop employee.
I am not surprised. I have done construction maintainance at quite a few nursing homes, and most of them treat their residents like crap, so I am not surprised that they treat their employees the same way.
Look a**hole. Just because you’re a shi**y manager doesn’t mean you can come on here and talk s**t to hard working people of America that make sure YOUR lazy a** gets a bonus. If you’re such a great manager, then what the F**K are you doing on this site all day instead of taking care of your lazy a** employees. You’re just a punk b**ch that would never talk like that to your employees so you come on here and do it to hard working people that you’ve never employed. And furthermore, I would never work for you in order to get my lazy a** fired by you. You’re a f**king idiot. Pu**y A** Douche Bag!!
TGTFYLA…nice troll.
That doesn’t surprise me either… my older brother has been in nursing his whole life, and had similar horror stories. I think it’s awful that caretakers take so much abuse.
Hey guy, even the military folks get told to go to sick call, or go home and change when puking or covered in puke/piss.. may not be able to stay home, but they at LEAST allow you to change. And you know it. ‘Nuf said.
@Dee
Thanks. Nice to be noticed and loved.
@ Woman that corrected an insubordinate(<——Correct spelling, by the way)
I agree with you. Being a prior Marine, the Corps always let you go to sick call even for a cold just to get medicine. They just don't want you getting everyone else sick. But still had to go to work.
Anywho.
I think it's shitty that this boss lady didn't let someone, who probably smelled like puke and pee, go home after they were obviously under the weather. It's a sad world when people can't empathize with others.
@WTCAI….uh….learn to spell. sheesh!
They didn’t have ANY extra scrubs you could put on? In a NURSING home? Sad. I’d have quit too…… if it wasn’t in this economy that is.
I guess the boss didnt notice the her scent over the residents.
HOLY–CRAP.
And they wonder why nurses are in demand, I’m betting that facility has a high turnover rate!! TGTFYLA, I’ve gotten even with pukes like you that I’ve had for bosses in times past, so if you truly are a supervisor, it’s just a matter of time, karma’s a bitch when it bites back!!
ewwwww, why would you vomit and pee all over yourself? that’s just irresponsible
I would have taken a sh!t on her desk and said how is that for unprofessional behavior. Nothing states a resignation better than a big pile of steaming sh!t !!!
In some states, it is the law to remain on duty as a registered nurse until you report off to the next nurse even if you are sick. It would have been a smart move if the manager had removed you from direct patient care and told you you to stay hydrated and resting until help arrived.
You all kind of jump to conclusions. She doesn’t say that she quit because the woman said she couldn’t go home. Maybe she quit because she was thinking of the people she works with. If it were me and I was taking care of people in a nursing home and I was covered in puke and piss, I would have stayed at work if I had to, but if they made me stay with the patients I would have quit because I don’t want to be associated with those types of people. The people willing to get other people sick. Perhaps we should ask the author why she quit as opposed to just assuming it was becuase she had to stay. And if they didn’t even let her change, yes, I would NOT want to be associated with them.
Was your boss German? Some of those Germans are mean. Sounds lik a German.
